Delicate ceramic box, with a tile cover, which is manually painted over a high relief surface. The inspiration, comes from the tiles used in Portugal by the XV and XVI centuries, with some "hispano-arabes" influences. This presence, and the original tiles can be found at some Portuguese Monuments. |

The Origin: handmade in one of the most important Portuguese ceramic regions - Caldas ad Rainha.
Ceramics as a wall covering reflects and takes part of a strong vestige of the culture and occupants of the Mediterranean Sea. It was trough a powerful Islamic influence, mainly from the XV century, that this ornamental vocation expanded throughout Southern Europe. This influence had a great impact on the Peninsular Architecture, specifically in Portugal, where about this continuous utilization lasted for 5 centuries.
Within Portuguese ceramics, the tile is undoubtedly the most beautiful, characteristic and assorted expression of Art. |
